About Us
The Bilharzia Storytelling Initiative (BSL) Rwanda — using storytelling and community engagement to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Our Story
From a pitch competition to a national initiative
BSL started as a pitch competition that took place in 2022 aimed at choosing the best project that uses storytelling to eliminate bilharzia. It was organized by Dolberg Media and MERCK. We pitched the project, began getting involved with NTDs, and that marked the birth of the Bilharzia Storytelling Initiative.
Since then, we have grown into an organization working across multiple districts in Rwanda — Bugesera, Gatsibo, and Ruhango — reaching thousands of community members through schools, health events, and media campaigns.
Vision & Mission
What drives us and where we're headed
Our Vision
To build a healthy NTDs-free generation with empowered communities, while fostering young talents to contribute to community well-being and development.
Our Mission
To combat NTDs particularly in regions surrounding lakes, wetlands, and other high-risk areas where residents are vulnerable to infection, and promote young people's talent.
Core Values
The principles that guide everything we do
Respect
Treat all individuals — beneficiaries, colleagues, and partners — with dignity, regardless of background, culture, or beliefs.
Integrity
Communicate honestly and accurately; never mislead or distort facts related to NTDs (schistosomiasis) or affected communities.
Empathy
Show compassion for those affected by NTDs and our beneficiaries, such as school-aged children. Listen to and amplify local voices and experiences.
Collaboration
Work collaboratively internally, fostering teamwork, and build good relationships with external partners by leveraging collective knowledge and resources.
Accountability
Accept responsibility for decisions, actions, and resource management. Learn from mistakes and be open to advice and feedback.
Inclusiveness
Ensure all stories and communications reflect gender, age, and social diversity, avoiding stigma or marginalization of beneficiaries.
Punctuality
Be timely with assigned tasks and meet deadlines to ensure the project progresses smoothly.
